Hussain’s passion is to do all he can to prevent loss of vision due to glaucoma. He is adept with the latest technology used in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. Our medical facility flourishes with state-of-the-art medical, laser and surgical care for glaucoma patients.

Dr Patel is also a skilled and experienced cataract surgeon and he is pleased to be able to restore vision in patients who have cataracts. He is also able to provide complete eye care for common eye problems and diseases.


Training

  • Pursued Higher Education in Medicine at the University of Otago

  • Worked as a junior doctor in Wellington and Auckland including 2 years as a Senior House Officer in Ophthalmology

  • Completed Doctorate of Medicine (MD) research degree in 2004 at the University of Auckland

  • Completed 5 years of advanced registrar training in Ophthalmology in Hamilton and Auckland, which led to Fellowship of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists

  • Completed another 2 years of clinical and research fellowship training in glaucoma and cataract surgery in Auckland and Canada (Toronto)


Other work activities

In addition to private practice, Hussain is a Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology with the New Zealand National Eye Centre and University of Auckland. He is actively involved in glaucoma research, supervision of research fellows as well as the teaching of medical and optometry students. In fact, Hussain was awarded the 2019 Dennis Pickup Clinical Educator Award for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Auckland.

Hussain has published numerous works in peer-reviewed journals and he often gives lectures and presentations at local and international ophthalmology meetings. He is also a Visiting Lecturer for the Australian College of Optometry and has been the clinical lead for the ADHB/University of Auckland Advanced Glaucoma Therapeutics Training programme for optometrists.

Hussain is also a Consultant at Greenlane Clinical Centre where he teaches budding ophthalmologists in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Hussain is also a member of Voluntary Ophthalmic Services Overseas (VOSO) and has been involved in the training of overseas ophthalmologists in Asia and the Pacific.

A personal note

I was born and grew up in Auckland. When I am not working I spend most of my free time with my partner and our two children. We enjoy spending time with our families and friends in both Auckland and Wellington. My hobbies include travelling, golf, fishing, going for walks, running and reading.
